As running a business it’s smart to set up some goals you want to achieve. These goals can be set for a day, a month or a year. Either way, you want to achieve those goals and if you run a large business you will need your employees to help you achieving the goals. To achieve what you want through your employees, you can formalize their behavior. This way you prescribe their behavior and determine the freedom of action. There are three ways to formalize behavior and I’m gonna give them to you!
Why You Should Think about Formalizing Behavior
The main reason for organizations to formalize behavior is to make behavior predictable and controllable. This way you can coordinate acts and make sure they’re carefully run.
You can also think of formalizing behavior when you want to ensure your company of a constant and efficient production. Through formalized behavior you can contain order and regularity.
You can specify the function description so your employees know exactly how to work, even before they come into your business. Let them know what you expect from they and what they can expect from you. Be clear about the goals to achieve and the sphere you want to create on the working place.

2. Content of Work
You can formalize behavior by setting up procedures on how to work. You can make procedures on how to communicate with costumers, how to administrate or how to use the computer well. Certainly, the procedure how to communicate with costumers will be appreciated by your costumers. You can guarantee them a fair treatment and this way you can protect the costumers, but also your employees.
Watch out when you set up too many procedures: your employees are going to act all the same and can be less creative when it comes to thinking of new ideas.
You can set up some rules for your employees so they know how to act on the working place. Rules are something different than the procedures I discussed in the paragraph above. The rules you set up are for the employees mutual and not the the costumers. The rules you can think about here are a dress code on the working place.
You don’t have to specify this to ‘a black dress’ but you can keep it general like ‘formal dresses and skirts or suits’. Your employees can be creative how to dress up to work and this way you can keep them motivated to stay creative on the working place either.
Pitfalls to Watch Out for
Of course it depends on what kind of organization you’re running to formalize behavior in a good way. When you want your employees to stay creative and open-minded, it’s a good thing to formalize behavior not too much. By setting up too many procedures and rules you can block their imagination and creativity and it will be no good to your business.
When you are running a large company which is designed to help costumers and related to public authorities it’s a good thing to think about formalizing behavior. This way you will be sure every costumer is treated equally and you can’t be accused of favoritism.
Formalizing behavior is different for each business and it’s a good idea to really think this through. What kind of work you want your employees to run and how you want them to run that? What kind of procedures and rules will help and protect them to run their actions?
